At Open Door Architecture, we believe historic homes carry stories worth preserving, and this Victorian renovation is a beautiful example.
A young couple with their daughter wanted to adapt the house for modern living while honoring its original character. Rather than opening everything into one large space, both parents—who needed separate home offices—chose to embrace the traditional floorplan. The central hallway with its soaring ceilings now creates a graceful flow between the living room, dining room, and a fully renovated kitchen, complemented by a new butler’s pantry and mudroom for everyday functionality.
The home had once been divided into apartments, leaving its rooms fragmented for decades. Our design carefully wove those smaller spaces back together, allowing intimate rooms to open into big family memories. This balance of preserving detail while improving flow creates a home that feels both timeless and livable—an ode to its Victorian past with the comfort and usability of a modern plan.
Upstairs, the once-empty attic was reimagined into a retreat. A new staircase rises from a front office, leading to a small office tucked under the eaves and a cozy TV room. The remainder of the attic became a full primary suite, complete with bedroom, bathroom, and generous closet space—because storage is always precious. Every choice reflects an appreciation for the home’s history while creating spaces that will serve the family for years to come.
